2023 Race Report
The largest ever field of triathletes and runners competed at the biennial Straddie Salute on Minjerribah North Stradbroke Island on Saturday 20 May, 2023.
In beautiful conditions, just over 1000 competitors took up the challenge to swim, bike or run around the stunning natural terrain course at Point Lookout.
As the sun set over Home Beach four new champions were crowned at the Stradbroke Beach Hotel. In the Straddie Salute offroad event it was 2016 and 2019 champion Brodie Gardner who dominated the field from start to finish while 2017 champion Kate Schultz claimed the trophy with some impressive racing in the women’s event.
In the Straddie Pure road event, 2016 champion Sophie Malowiecki made light work of the tough course taking line honours, while after several previous attempts Dominic Churchett, put together three strong legs to take home the trophy.
In the Straddie 10km Adventure Run, Nicolas Marie blitzed the field in a time of 40.06 while Katie Ireland was equally dominant in the women’s field breaking the tape 1st female and 3rd overall.
All age category champions were presented with medals designed by local Dunwich student Josie Ritchie (Aged 10 years) who won a competition run by acclaimed local artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins.
Event Director Steve Guise said the event was a huge success from both an athlete and an economic perspective. “The feedback from our competitors, the local community groups and the 40 island businesses directly involved in this year’s event has been outstanding” he said.
The Straddie Salute is backed by major sponsors Sealink, Tourism and Events Queensland and Redland City Council and also supported by Salming Australia, Stradbroke Beach Hotel, Straddie Brewing Co, Infinit Nutrition and Giant Redlands.
